“FUCK!” I MUTTERED. “YOU’VE GOT a chip on you.”

She held up her wrist. “Reinserted the moment I got here,” she said grimly, and pointed at the roof. “That’ll be knockout gas.”

I took a deep breath and put my hand over my nose and mouth. So did she.

We ran down the corridor.

Sauli stood over the lieutenant, one of the shrivers in his hands, the muzzle lined up on the officer’s face.

“He’s out,” I told Sauli, snatching up the other shriver.

“Just making sure,” Sauli said. His voice shook.

I slung the shriver over my shoulder and picked at the faux skin on my wrist. Sauli did the same.

“Knife!” Juliyana said, her tone clipped. She held out her hand toward me.

Sauli reached into the pocket on his thigh and pulled out a folding knife that he flipped into open position, locked, and held out to her.

Juliyana’s eyes got a little bigger as she stared at Sauli, taking in the breasts under his jacket.

He tilted his head. “Really? That’s what you’re going to focus on first?”

She took the knife and turned it in her hand and stabbed carefully at her wrist. “It’s more the length you’ve gone to that made me stare,” she muttered and hissed as she sliced open the skin.

I balled up the patch of faux skin and the attached ID chip and tossed it at the recycle maw, then pulled the shriver around. There was no need to look casual anymore. They knew we were here.

“As soon as you’re ready,” I told Juliyana, trying to remove any note of impatience from my voice. I didn’t want to jog her elbow in any way. A slip of the knife, and we’d be dealing with a severed major vein instead of an oozing cut.

She inserted her thumb and finger into the cut, probed, then gave a grunt and plucked the little chip out and carried it over to the maw and dropped it in.

Sauli held out the strip of shirt hem he’d sawn off his uniform shirt and Juliyana bound the wrist.

I was already moving. Sauli followed me. We sprinted down the main corridor that ran in parallel with the corridor of cells where Juliyana had been held. It was far longer than the one we’d used to get here.

The drop shaft I had expected was at the end, facing an intersection of corridors. I couldn’t see beyond the opposite corridor, but I didn’t need to, because four armed Rangers were sprinting toward us from that corridor.

One raised his shriver and fired. The bolt sizzled past us.

“Here!” Sauli shot at the control panel on one of the few doors in this corridor.

The panel fizzed and sparked and the door opened. Lewis had given us a pair of souped up shrivers. They weren’t torrent shrivers, but they weren’t standard issue, either.

I rammed the door with my shoulder to encourage it to open faster. We dashed through.

Sauli’s instinct had been on the money. A flight of stairs twisted up to the next floor.

“Lock the door!” Juliyana shouted at Sauli.
